Jell-O Simply Shows Clean Label Reformulation Has Entered Legacy Brands
Kraft Heinz has launched Jell-O Simply, a new line made without FD&C colors or artificial sweeteners. The new products use ingredients such as fruit juice, vegetables, and turmeric for color, and some products contain at least 25% less sugar than regular versions. The line is part of Kraft Heinz’s broader plan to remove artificial dyes from its U.S. products by 2027.
When a Classic Brand Reformulates, the Market Has Changed
Jell-O is not a niche wellness product. It is a highly recognizable mainstream brand with strong consumer memory. That makes this launch important. Clean-label reformulation is no longer limited to premium startups or natural-food channels. It is entering legacy food brands that depend on broad retail distribution and mass consumer acceptance.
The clean-label trend has moved from brand positioning into portfolio risk management. Large food companies are increasingly trying to protect iconic products from regulatory pressure, retailer expectations, and changing consumer attitudes toward artificial colors and sweeteners.
Reformulation Must Protect Taste, Texture, and Nostalgia
For a product like Jell-O, reformulation is not only a technical issue. It is also emotional. Consumers expect familiar color, texture, sweetness, and fun. If a cleaner product loses the original experience, it risks becoming a weak substitute rather than a stronger upgrade.
This creates an opportunity for ingredient suppliers. Natural color systems, sweetener blends, flavor enhancers, hydrocolloids, stabilizers, and texture modifiers all become part of the reformulation toolkit. The goal is not simply to remove artificial additives. The goal is to maintain the full eating experience while improving the ingredient label.
Clean-label success depends on whether suppliers can protect the consumer experience, not just remove controversial ingredients.
Legacy Reformulation Can Pull the Whole Supply Chain
When large brands reformulate, demand can quickly scale across packaging formats, retail channels, contract manufacturers, and ingredient suppliers. A permanent product line also gives suppliers stronger volume visibility than a limited test launch.
For the food additive and nutrition ingredient market, this is a clear signal. Natural colors and cleaner sweetening systems are no longer optional innovation themes. They are becoming part of mainstream product renovation.
Jell-O Simply suggests that the next clean-label wave will be led not only by new brands, but by old brands trying to remain culturally and commercially relevant.
