Nova Chemical's PE plant expansion project will be put into operation next year
On April 12, Nova Chemical stated that the company’s second polyethylene (PE) plant using Advanced SCLAIRTECH technology (AST) and the third phase of the Correna cracker expansion project had completed 65%. The first of the eight substations was safely energized in March this year. It is estimated that the two sets of devices will start full-scale production activities after the Korenna production base is shut down for maintenance at the end of 2022. The Korenner production site will be shut down for maintenance in the spring of 2022.
Nova Chemical said that the newly built PE device using AST is located at the new Rockby site in St. Clair, Ontario, and the designed production capacity will reach 1 billion pounds per year (454,000 tons/year). The expansion project of the cracking unit will expand the capacity of the existing unit by more than 50% and will provide ethylene feedstock for the new PE unit.
Nova Chemical currently has three manufacturing plants and one corporate office in Sarnia-Lemton, Ontario. The Korenner cracker produces 1.8 billion pounds of ethylene each year, as well as approximately 250 million pounds of by-products. The Korenner cracker provides raw materials to the Moore plant and the St. Clair River plant to convert ethylene into 1.38 billion pounds per year of PE. Ethane is the main raw material for the production of ethylene in the Korenner cracker.
