Highly Pathogenic H5 Avian Flu Outbreak in the Czech Republic, 8 Birds Infected and 7 Dead, Source of Outbreak Remains a Mystery!

According to the latest information from the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), on August 27, 2024, the Czech National Veterinary Authority reported a severe outbreak of H5 highly pathogenic influenza A to WOAH. The outbreak occurred in the Czech Republic, in the town of Krumlov in Southern Bohemia. The outbreak was confirmed on August 26, 2024, but the specific source of the outbreak has not yet been identified or determined.

After a series of clinical observations and laboratory tests, a total of eight birds were found to be suspected to be infected. Of the eight suspected infected birds, seven became ill and eventually died. In order to prevent the further spread of the outbreak, the local veterinary department quickly took measures to cull and properly dispose of the remaining suspected infected bird.

At present, the outbreak is still ongoing, and the Czech National Veterinary Administration said that it will closely monitor the development of the outbreak and promised to submit follow-up reports to WOAH on a weekly basis. This will help the international community better understand the progress of the epidemic and take appropriate prevention and control measures.
