Hydrofluoric acid burn kit usage process

Generally, the hydrofluoric acid burn kit includes dressings, bandages, and calcium gluconate gel for rapid treatment and pain relief. 

 

Concentrated hydrofluoric acid (HF) burns are often very serious and can lead to serious complications due to fluoride toxicity. Concentrated HF liquid or vapor can cause severe burns, metabolic imbalances, pulmonary edema, and life-threatening arrhythmias. Even moderate exposure to concentrated HF can rapidly become fatal if not treated promptly. Burns greater than 25 square inches (160 square centimeters) can cause severe systemic toxicity.

 

Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is a dangerous inorganic acid that is widely used in industrial fields such as chemical, electronics manufacturing, glass etching, smelting, and cleaning. Equipping industrial sites with a hydrofluoric acid burn kit can effectively protect the lives of employees.

 

Hydrofluoric acid burn kit usage process

1. Immediately go to a safe shower or other available water source and rinse with plenty of water. Rinse off excess HF. It is most important to rinse off the acid quickly and thoroughly. All clothing must be removed. Continue to soak under water until calcium gluconate gel is found. Calcium gluconate gel can be massaged into the skin while flushing with water.

 

2. Call medical personnel and continue first aid.

 

3. Apply 2.5% calcium gluconate gel every 15 minutes and continue massaging until the pain subsides. Remember that rubber gloves must be worn when touching the victim. If the pain recurs, apply calcium gluconate gel and massage while taking the injured worker to the emergency room.

 

Calcium gluconate gel

Calcium gluconate gel consists of 2.5% USP calcium gluconate and a surgical water-soluble lubricant and is widely used for first aid and/or primary treatment of cutaneous HF burns. The gel is portable to put in hydrofluoric acid burn kit and can be used to initially treat small burns that are far from medical care. The gel is not recommended for concentrated HF burns except as a first aid measure.

 

When applying the gel, the burn area should be massaged quickly and repeatedly until the pain subsides. Neoprene or PVC gloves must be worn when the gel is first applied to avoid secondary burns to the person treating the burn. This treatment can be started without waiting for a doctor's order. If used as the sole treatment, a large amount of calcium gluconate gel must be massaged into the burn area for several hours. Pain relief can be used to assess the effectiveness of this treatment. If pain is not well relieved after 30-40 minutes, other treatments such as injections of gluconate should be considered.

 

This gel is particularly useful for facial burns, especially those near the mouth and eyes or on the ears. For very small burns, it may be convenient to use the gel because the casualty can easily apply and massage the gel into the burned area. For dilute acid burns, such as those that occur when using commercial products such as rust removers, aluminum cleaners, or etching solutions, it may be more convenient to use the gel.
