Boehringer Ingelheim Acquires SAH: A New Breakthrough in Animal Health or Expansion of Business Bubble?
Boehringer Ingelheim is a biopharmaceutical company focused on human and animal health. The company has successfully acquired Saiba Animal Health (SAH), a company dedicated to the development of therapeutic vaccines aimed at addressing an unmet need in the field of veterinary medicine. The acquisition allows Boehringer Ingelheim to add SAH's innovative technology platform to its product line, which uses therapeutic vaccine technology to stimulate immune responses to chronic diseases common in companion animals, such as allergies, inflammation and pain.
SAH's therapeutic vaccine contains virus-like particles that activate the animal's immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against disease-causing proteins. This approach is expected to result in longer lasting effects and longer duration of action, while simplifying care for pet owners and improving convenience and treatment compliance.
As pet life expectancy increases, the need for chronic disease management is growing. According to Science magazine, the life expectancy of dogs has doubled in the past four decades, while domestic cats live twice as long as their wild counterparts. In addition, between 2012 and 2022, the percentage of U.S. households with senior dogs (7 years and older) increased from 41.6% to 52.5%, while the percentage of senior cat households increased from 46.1% to 51.7%. These advances are generally attributed to improvements in veterinary care techniques and the quality of pets' diets.
"As pets live longer, their medical needs change that are often not met by existing treatments," Dr. Eric Haxmar, global head of innovation at Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, said in the press release. He continued, "As a research-focused company, we are excited about SAH's breakthrough technology platform, which promises to deliver more concrete and lasting therapeutic effects for chronic diseases in companion animals."
Prior to this acquisition, the two companies have worked together several times to improve chronic disease management in companion animals. These collaborations advance the development of species-specific drug candidates through SAH's technology platform. "We are pleased with the further development of our long-standing partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim," said Dr. Gary T. Jennings, SAH's chief executive officer, in a press release. "This collaboration will pave the way for the development of entirely new pet therapeutics that will hopefully have a profound impact on the lives of animals and their owners," he stressed.
SAH was founded in 2013 as a spin-off company of the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Over the years, the company has used its patented vaccine platform to improve the quality of life of companion animals. Now, with the acquisition by Boehringer Ingelheim, SAH will contribute therapeutics to its R&D portfolio.
