The Stearic Acid Use in Cream: Benefits and Common Myths

Introduction:
Stearic acid (CH₃(CH₂) ₁₆CO₂H) is a saturated fatty acid derived from fats and oils and appears as a waxy, white, and odorless solid. It is commonly found in sources like animal fats and certain vegetable oils. In its molecule, there is a methyl group (CH3) at one end along with a carboxyl group (COOH) at the other end. In between is a 16-carbon long chain in which each carbon atom is bonded to the maximum number of hydrogen atoms thus characterized as a saturated fat.
Stearic acid is an important compound as it has strong applications in the current industry thanks to its physical and suitable chemical properties. Most recently, stearic acid use in cream products has significantly increased and many people are skeptical about whether it has harmful effects on human skin which needs to be cleared out.
The use of this acid in cosmetics is due to its unique properties of emulsifying, thickening, and stabilizing when added to cosmetic products. Before we get into how it is used as a component in cosmetics, it should be noted that it holds GRAS status (generally recognized as safe) by the (FDA) and has been used in the industry for quite some time without any reported problems.
1. Emulsifier:
The prime function of this compound in face creams is to act as an emulsifier and help water and oil-based ingredients in cosmetic formulations to properly blend in their formulations. This feature is extremely important for this industry during the production of other cosmetics as well including body lotions, and general-purpose moisturizers as these products require proper mixing of water and oil components, and not only that, but they also need to retain a stable and uniform texture.
It also helps to maintain the face cream’s consistency and ensures a smooth application. That is why, formulations of sunscreens, moisturizers, baby lotions, and common makeup products (foundations, powders, and mascaras) frequently have this saturated fatty acid.
2. As a Thickening Agent:
Nobody wants to apply a cream that spills off from their hands or face. This is why a face cream needs to have a thick but smooth and homogeneous texture in which all ingredients must be properly mixed. This is the prime function of stearic acid use in cream products during their production as it provides them with proper thickening and a smooth texture resulting in a rich and creamy feel.
3. Enhanced Moisturizing:
This saturated fatty acid is not itself responsible for a moisturizing effect in cremes and lotions but when combined with other moisturizing ingredients in such products, it can help them in their function by improving their texture and spreadability on the skin. This helps to keep the skin moisturized and may help lessen the appearance of aging by giving a more youthful appearance. Although this compound isn't the only treatment for skin conditions like eczema when combined with other therapies, its moisturizing qualities can significantly help relieve and improve symptoms of this and similar skin issues.
4. Non-Comedogenic
This acid is proven to be not getting into one’s skin pores and locking them which can result in many skin conditions. The reason behind this is due to the larger molecular size compared to certain other fatty acids and higher molecular weight. This restricts this compound from penetrating the skin pores and avoids blocking them. This makes them a very suitable choice for face creams and other cosmetic products.
5. Non-Occlusive
As it doesn’t block the pores of the skin, it also creates a very light application on the skin without putting a heavy barrier on the skin due to its great emollient nature. Because of this, common issues like the accumulation of dirt, sebum, and other common impurities in skin pores are significantly avoided.

It functions as a lubricant, emulsifier, emollient, and texture-enhancing ingredient in skin care formulas. It also helps soften and moisturize the skin although it doesn’t create a moisturizing effect by itself but helps other chemicals to do so. It also works well for binding in other components and keeping them from disintegrating also increasing the shelf life of these products. It is commonly found in cosmetics like baby lotions, sunscreens, moisturizers, soaps, and similar products.
