Eli Lilly Spends $1.8 Billion to Expand in Ireland, Crisis Lurking Behind Alzheimer's Disease Drug? 1,500 Jobs at Risk!
Eli Lilly and Company announced it will invest $1.8 billion in two manufacturing sites in Ireland to boost production of its drugs for treating obesity and Alzheimer's disease. The company plans to invest $1 billion to expand its manufacturing site in Limerick and increase production capacity for bioactive ingredients, including those used to treat early-stage Alzheimer's disease. At the same time, Eli Lilly will invest $800 million in a new plant in Kinsey to meet demand for its latest diabetes and obesity treatments. These investments are part of Eli Lilly's strategy to scale up manufacturing, with the company committing more than $20 billion to build, expand and acquire manufacturing facilities in the United States and Europe since 2020.
Edgardo Hernandez, executive vice president and president of Lilly's pharmaceutical business, said the investments will boost the production of key medicines to help patients with diabetes, obesity and Alzheimer's disease lead healthier lives. The company also plans to utilize advanced technologies such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, automated robots and systems to ensure proper execution of manufacturing processes and safe and reliable drug supply. The Limerick site expansion is expected to add 150 jobs to the company when completed, bringing the total to 450 employees.
Lilly's total investment in Limerick reached $2 billion, double the amount announced in March 2023. Eli Lilly originally announced the Limerick facility in 2022 and officially broke ground in March 2023. Production of Eli Lilly's bioactive ingredient is expected to begin in 2026. In addition, the expansion of the Kinsale facility marks the completion of a state-of-the-art project for the manufacture of complex peptides, with digital-first processes and continuous manufacturing techniques. The facility recently received an award in the "Facility of the Year" innovation category from the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers.
Ireland's skilled workforce, favorable regulatory environment and government policies that support innovation have contributed to Lilly's growth in the country for nearly 50 years. Eli Lilly's Global Business Resolution Center in Cork has doubled employment levels since 2019 and is expected to have more than 2,000 employees by the end of 2024. Eli Lilly is also committed to sustainability and respect for the local environment, having established environmental programs at all of its locations in Ireland to monitor environmental quality, and owns the largest private solar farm in the Republic of Ireland in Kinsale to power the facility.
