Controversy Over Vitamin K2 Intensifies, A1300 Application May Impact Future of Special Medical Foods

On September 13, 2024, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) officially issued a notice document No. 307-24. In this notice, there is a particular reference to the application number A1300. The main issue of the application is whether vitamin K2 (menadione-7) can be used as a form of vitamin K in foods for special medical purposes. In order to listen widely to the public and interested parties, FSANZ has decided to open a consultation on the application.

The purpose of this consultation is to ensure that vitamin K2 (menadione-7) used in foods for special medical purposes meets safety and nutritional requirements while ensuring its health benefits for target consumer groups. FSANZ hopes that through a wide range of opinions, it can fully understand the views and suggestions of various parties on the application, so that the interests and needs of all parties can be fully considered in the final decision.

The deadline for comments was set at 6pm (Canberra time) on 11 October 2024. This means that all individuals or institutions wishing to participate in the call for comments need to submit their comments and suggestions by this point in time. FSANZ encourages people to take an active part in communicating their views and suggestions to Food Standards Australia via email, written letters or other officially designated means.

This consultation is not only an important evaluation of the A1300 application, but also a demonstration of FSANZ's active listening to the public in the process of developing and updating food standards.
