Pine Resin Essential Oil Additive Will Rewrite the Rules of Animal Feed, Fully Effective by 2034!

According to the latest news from the Official Journal of the European Union, on September 13, 2024, the European Commission officially published the Regulation number (EU) 2024/2464. This initiative is based on the relevant provisions of Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003, previously issued by the European Parliament and the Council, which aims to approve an essential oil of turpentine extracted from the coastal pine tree (scientific name Pinus pinaster Aiton) as a feed additive applicable to all animal species.

According to the detailed annex published by the European Commission, this oil is officially classified in the category of "sensory additives" in animal feed additives, and the specific functional group is "seasoning compounds". This means that the main role of the additive is to improve the sensory properties of animal feed, such as improving the smell and taste of feed, which may increase the animal's appetite and feed intake.

The validity period of the authorization is set to be ten years from the date of issuance, that is, ending on October 3, 2034. In addition, the provisions of this Regulation come into force on the twentieth day from the date of issue, ensuring that relevant parties have sufficient time to prepare and adjust to comply with the new regulatory requirements.

This decision is based on the results of a scientific assessment and risk analysis, and the European Commission considers that the use of this oil as a feed additive is safe under the specified conditions. The EU's aim is to promote innovation and diversification in the animal feed industry while ensuring animal welfare and food safety.
