$587 Million Valuation Doubts: BioAge Labs’ IPO Hides Crisis in Obesity Drug Market!

ECHEMI 2024-09-19

BioAge Labs, a biotechnology company focused on the field of obesity treatments, announced on Wednesday that it is seeking a valuation of up to $587 million in its U.S. initial public offering (IPO), according to regulatory filings. Against the backdrop of the overall poor performance of the U.S. IPO market in 2024, companies in the health care sector have performed relatively well. Market analysts predict that 2024 will be the year of recovery for the IPO market.

The company, based in Richmond, California, is set to join the ranks of biotech companies that have gone public this year. The trend comes at a time when the field of anti-obesity drug development is attracting attention from Wall Street and backing from several prominent venture capital firms. MBX Biosciences (MBX), which focuses on developing treatments for diabetes and obesity, saw its shares surge nearly 44% in their first day of trading on Nasdaq last week.

BioAge's experimental drug in development, azelaprag, is a GLP-1 agonist similar to the newly launched Zepbound and Wegovy from Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. Some analysts predict that the market for this new class of weight-loss drugs could reach $150 billion by the early 2030s.

BioAge has initiated a mid-stage clinical trial in conjunction with Zepbound and plans to conduct a trial in conjunction with Wegovy in the first half of 2025. The company said that part of the funds raised from the IPO will be used to advance the development of azelaprag to the late-stage research stage.

A few months ago, BioAge raised $170 million in a funding round led by life sciences investment firm Sofinnova Investments. U.S. stocks were volatile at the close on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates by half a percentage point. Sofinnova Venture Partners currently holds 7.3 percent beneficial ownership in the company and plans to reduce its stake to about 5.3 percent after the IPO.

BioAge plans to list its shares on NASDAQ under the ticker symbol "BIOA." Underwriters for the offering include Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Jefferies and Citigroup.
