BASF and Evonik launch amino products ammonia BMBcert™ for nylon/epoxy applications

ECHEMI 2024-10-09

Evonik and BASF have reached a cooperation agreement for the first delivery of BASF's ammonia BMBcert™ products. This continued cooperation highlights the commitment of both companies to provide products with a lower carbon footprint. With ammonia BMBcert™, BASF provides Evonik with an innovative solution with a carbon footprint that is at least 65% lower than conventional products.

Both BASF and Evonik are broadening their product portfolios with amino products using a biomass balance approach, which are readily available through existing sales channels and fully integrated into the enterprise resource planning systems of both companies.

“Evonik and BASF share the same vision: a firm belief in the ability of the chemical industry to transform and replace fossil energy with renewable raw materials and utilities. The supply of ammonia BMBcert™ is a major milestone for both of us,” said Jens Aßmann, Vice President Business Management Ammonia Value Chain and Amino Resins Operations at BASF.

Evonik has received the first batch of ammonia BMBcert™ produced by BASF. By integrating the product into its ISCC PLUS-certified production process, Evonik is demonstrating its commitment to a more sustainable economy and to achieving ambitious emission reduction targets. By 2030, Evonik aims to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions by 25% and scope 3 emissions by around 11% compared to 2021 levels, and to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

Evonik plans to integrate ammonia BMBcert™ into the production of its sustainable products, such as VESTAMIN® IPD eCO and VESTAMID® eCO polyamide 12. The “eCO” label reflects Evonik’s goal to reduce CO2 emissions through a mass balance approach by using renewable raw materials as a direct solution in existing systems and production processes. These eCO grades offer customers sustainable products without compromising performance. Conventional VESTAMIN® hardeners used in epoxy resin systems, typically for industrial flooring, marine and anti-corrosion coatings, can be seamlessly replaced with VESTAMIN® IPD eCO. The same is true for VESTAMID® eCO polyamide 12, which offers tailor-made high-performance polyamides for applications such as shoe soles, sunglasses, gas pipes, safety-related automotive parts, and more.

“We are pleased to work with BASF to source ammonia with a lower carbon footprint for our eCO products. This collaboration underscores our commitment to environmental stewardship and our ability to innovate in a rapidly changing market,” said Silvia Torrado, Global Procurement Director Basic Petrochemicals at Evonik.
BASF uses a mass balance approach to replace fossil resources at the beginning of the production process with certified biomethane from biowaste feedstocks used in the products. The mass-balanced products are certified according to the ISCC PLUS standard. In addition, BASF is using renewable electricity to produce ammonia, further reducing its carbon footprint.

By working with suppliers such as BASF, Evonik is committed to creating value-added solutions for customers and striving to go beyond chemistry to improve life now and in the future. One of its next phase goals is to generate 50% of sales from sustainable products and solutions by 2030.
