1.2 million tons per year! Sinopec Tianjin Ethylene Complex Successfully Put into Operation
Sinopec announced on the 13th that its new ethylene complex in Tianjin Nangang Industrial Zone has been successfully put into operation, with an annual output of 1.2 million tons of ethylene and downstream high-end new materials. It can provide 4 million tons of high-end chemical products and fine chemical raw materials to the downstream every year, making Sinopec an important player in the global petrochemical industry.
This new plant is a key project of the country's "14th Five-Year Plan" and is in line with the country's industrial growth goals. Sinopec's investment in this advanced ethylene plant demonstrates its commitment to improving petrochemical and chemical production capacity and contributing to the country's goal of increasing self-sufficiency in high-quality chemical raw materials. With the completion of this plant, Sinopec Tianjin Branch's total ethylene production capacity has now reached 2.5 million tons/year, greatly increasing production and consolidating Sinopec's leading position in the field.
The ethylene complex is more than just a simple plant. It is also integrated with the 320,000 barrels/day refinery of Sinopec Tianjin Refinery, further improving the operational efficiency of the site. This integration ensures a seamless and reliable supply of raw materials for the ethylene plant while optimizing energy use throughout the facility. The refinery's high output, combined with the new ethylene capacity, enhances Sinopec's ability to efficiently and economically produce a wide range of petrochemical products.
The ethylene complex supports 13 downstream projects, including production of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), a high-performance plastic widely used in packaging, and polyolefin elastomers (POE), a versatile chemical that combines the properties of rubber and plastic. Polyolefin elastomers are key materials in the automotive, medical and toy industries due to their flexibility, durability and ability to withstand a variety of environmental conditions. The incorporation of these advanced materials into downstream production reflects Sinopec's focus on producing high-value chemicals to meet the growing needs of different industries.
In addition to the plant's production capacity, Sinopec also placed a high priority on environmental sustainability when designing the ethylene complex. The facility is partially powered by solar energy, which helps achieve its goals of reducing its carbon footprint and improving energy efficiency. The design also prioritizes water conservation and energy efficiency, ensuring that the plant operates in an environmentally responsible manner while achieving high production targets.
The new Tianjin ethylene complex is a strategic expansion for Sinopec that will strengthen its position in the global petrochemical market. By focusing on energy efficiency, sustainability and the production of high-demand chemical products, Sinopec is well positioned to take advantage of growth in key industries such as automotive manufacturing, healthcare and packaging. This development further solidifies Sinopec's leading position in the domestic and global petrochemical industry.
