The first one involves using hydrogen gas to remove sulfur compounds from crude oil fractions, and the other converts this processed crude oil from H₂S gas into elemental sulfur, which is at temperatures above 115°C (melting point) to keep it in a liquid state.
This molten sulfur is then transported for further applications both within and outside the refinery of crude oil. For cost efficiency, the molten sulfur extracted from the state processes is converted into solid form before being processed further or sold to other industries.
This extracted sulfur in the molten state has a bright yellow-orange color, but this color can vary depending on impurities and the temperature at which this sulfur is kept. Its density also decreases slightly as temperature increases. It also shows polymerization (sulfur atoms form long chains) when the temperature of this molten sulfur is increased.
Applications of Molten Sulphur
This molten sulfur is used in different industries where it is converted into its liquid state as it may be converted into solid form before being transported. Having said that, below are the most significant applications of molten sulfur:
1. Sulfuric acid is one of the most commonly used acids in the industry alongside HCl, and it is produced by burning molten sulfur to get sulfur dioxide SO₂, which is then converted into sulfuric acid.
2. A process called vulcanization is very important in the plastic industry, which uses molten sulfur to create cross-links in rubber polymers. Mixing with sulfur provides great flexibility, which is needed to mix uniformly with industrially produced rubber.
3. Kraft pulping process uses molten sulfur, which works in the industry by breaking down lignin, which is significant for the paper industry.
4. Molten sulfur is also extensively used in mining for leaching metals from their ores (flotation). These metals include these chemicals uranium, nickel, and copper. Here, sulfur selectively binds to the desired metal particles, making them hydrophobic and can be separated from waste. Hence, it is an important element in the operations of the mining industry.
5. Molten sulfur is also used in the construction industry, where sulfur concrete is produced by mixing molten sulfur with aggregates and fillers. Such kind of sulfur solidifies upon cooling without needing water and binds with other materials. This concrete is both a durable and corrosion-resistant material.
6. It is also used as a soil acidifier in agriculture in elemental sulfur form (derived from molten sulfur) to lower pH levels in alkaline soils, improving nutrient availability.
