ECHEMI 2025-01-17

According to data released by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a total of 817 product shipments from China were denied entry into the U.S. between October and December 2024, with 249 of these being food products. This significant number highlights ongoing concerns regarding food safety and regulatory compliance.

Main Reasons for Import Rejections

The primary reasons for the rejection of food products from China during the fourth quarter are as follows:

  • Unsafe Additives: 131 shipments
  • Appears Unfit for Consumption: 92 shipments
  • Labeling Issues: 59 shipments
  • Toxic or Harmful Substances: 57 shipments
  • All or Part Rotting or Containing Other Inedible Substances: 38 shipments
  • Pesticide Residues: 24 shipments
  • Unhygienic Processing Conditions: 16 shipments
  • Unsafe Coloring Agents: 16 shipments
  • Not Registered as a Low-Acid Canned Food Manufacturer: 10 shipments
  • Unapproved New Drugs: 6 shipments
  • Other Concerns: Various issues, including allergen declaration (1 case), Salmonella (2 cases), Listeria (5 cases), and violations of the FD&C Act (4 cases).

Recommendations for Exporters

To prevent future rejections, it is crucial for exporting companies to:

  1. Control Quality During Transport: Ensure that food products remain fresh and uncontaminated throughout the shipping process.
  2. Review Labeling Carefully: Conduct thorough audits of product labels to ensure compliance with U.S. regulations.
  3. Manage Additive Use: Monitor and control the use of raw materials and additives to avoid non-compliance with safety standards.

By addressing these areas, exporters can improve their chances of successful shipments and maintain their market access to the U.S.
