Arkema's Strategic Advancements in 2024: A Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
Celebrating 40 Years in China
In 2024, Arkema marked a significant milestone by celebrating 40 years of development in China, gaining widespread media attention and industry recognition for its efforts in sustainability, niche markets, and corporate social responsibility. The company has actively participated in the deepening collaboration between China and France in the field of specialty materials.
Xiaoyu Zhang, President of Arkema Greater China, expressed strong confidence in the Chinese market. As the group's second-largest national market, China remains a key focus for Arkema. In 2025, Arkema plans to deepen its investments in China and drive sustainable development through innovation, contributing significantly to the green transformation of the industry.
Consolidating Market Leadership
Zhang highlighted that the achievements over the past 40 years reflect Arkema's unwavering commitment to the Chinese market. With ongoing cooperation between China and France fostering mutual benefits across various sectors, Arkema aims to achieve further sustainable innovation and commercial growth.
In December 2024, Arkema completed the acquisition of Dow's flexible packaging adhesive business, significantly enhancing its product portfolio and technological innovations under the Bostik brand. This move strengthens Arkema's position in the global flexible packaging market and injects new growth momentum into its operations in China.
A key growth project for Arkema in China is the organic peroxide capacity expansion at its Changshu site, set to begin production in early 2025. This expansion will increase capacity by 2.5 times, providing robust support for local customers and reinforcing Arkema's leadership in the Chinese market.
Vision for a Sustainable Future
Arkema's vision, "Innovative Materials for a Sustainable World," focuses on the "One Arkema" strategy, which aims to combine diverse products and expertise from various business units to offer innovative, high-performance, and sustainable solutions across multiple sectors, including automotive, cosmetics, aerospace, packaging, electronics, and sports equipment.
Leading in Green Practices
In recognition of its sustainability efforts, Arkema was honored in 2023 with the "Green Supply Chain Management Award" as part of China's corporate carbon neutrality performance rankings. The company has long prioritized sustainability, with over 90% of its patents directly related to this goal. Arkema plans to accelerate organic growth in high-performance materials while enhancing decarbonization measures to pave the way for its 2050 net-zero carbon goal.
Starting January 2025, the carbon footprint of Arkema's flagship bio-based product, Rilsan PA11, will decrease to 1.3 kg CO₂ equivalent per kg, representing an 80% reduction compared to traditional polyamide resins produced from fossil resources. Arkema is steadily working towards its 2030 target of reducing product carbon footprints to 1 kg CO₂ equivalent per kg.
Expanding Green Innovation Initiatives
In 2024, Arkema launched the "Green Innovation Classroom" corporate social responsibility project, themed "Green Living, Achieving a Sustainable Future," in schools across Guizhou and Zhangjiagang. Since 2016, this initiative has provided facilities, supplies, and "climate innovation courses" to over 20 schools in Jiangsu, Hebei, Yunnan, and Guizhou, aiming to inspire students' innovative thinking and environmental responsibility.
In 2025, Arkema plans to further expand the "Green Innovation Classroom" program, reaching more regions and benefiting more children. The goal is to plant the seeds of sustainable development in the hearts of young students, fostering environmental awareness through knowledge and innovation.
