2021 logistics freight rates analysis-ECHEMI

ECHEMI 2021-05-13

In 2021, high freight rates, congestion and delays in the container market will become the new normal.

Since the second half of 2020, soaring demand in the container market and shortage of containers have greatly pushed up freight rates and caused widespread congestion in major ports around the world.

The container shipping market is moving towards a "new normal". The high freight rates and the cyclical rebound of the market may continue for several months. Both shippers and logistics companies may face difficult times.

According to Lars Jensen, an analyst at Vespucci Maritime, a maritime analysis agency

The data shows that among the 21 routes in the world, the freight index of 16 routes has increased, and the freight index of only 5 routes has fallen.

European cargo

The Nordic region of the Baltic Freight Index (FBX) rose 5% this week , a significant increase of 475% compared to the same period last year.

The spot price of FBX in the Mediterranean region rose by 10% , as shippers from Asia are scrambling to find a space and urgently cover their positions in order to meet the upcoming summer holidays. Compared to 12 months ago, short-term interest rates have soared by a "not so spectacular" 345%.

As the demand for space is still high, the volume of European cargo this quarter is still considerable.

Middle East

There were 5 cargo boats from Shanghai to the end of the month, and 4 cargo boats to the Red Sea. Cancellation of ship plans caused freight rates to rise.

Southeast Asia

The situation on this route is slightly optimistic, with freight rates rising in the second half of this month. The small cabinet is about more than $1,000.

Africa

Freight and storage space in Africa are very tight, which is mainly due to the chain reaction caused by the time of the Suez Canal.

U.S. routes

The freight rate has reached about $11000/20GP, and the space needs to be scheduled. It is currently the most tight route for China's export cargo.
