Global Pigment Industry Transformation Driven by Innovation and Demand for Sustainability
The global pigment industry is undergoing a significant transformation, fueled by technological advancements and shifting consumer preferences. According to Mordor Intelligence, the pigment market is projected to reach a remarkable $31.08 billion by 2025, with expectations to climb to $35.68 billion by 2030, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of over 2.8% during the forecast period.
This shift is particularly evident in the construction sector, where demand for pigments is set to soar alongside a projected increase in global building output, expected to exceed $4.2 trillion in the next 15 years. The industry is leaning toward sustainable and eco-friendly production methods, with manufacturers investing heavily in green technologies. Major players are adjusting their product offerings to comply with stringent environmental regulations while maintaining high performance.
The demand for pigments remains robust in architectural and industrial coatings. The World Coatings and Paint Industry Association reported a 1% growth in the architectural coatings market in 2022, while industrial coatings achieved total sales of $45.6 billion in the same year.
Mark Ryan, Market and Product Manager at Shepherd Color, noted that the pigment market improved in 2024, with all sectors bouncing back from the challenges of 2023. He remarked, “The supply chain has stabilized, and we hope this growth marks a return to normalcy.” Trust Chem’s Executive Vice President, Falko Orlowski, echoed these sentiments, stating that 2024 saw a slight natural growth in the pigment market, with abundant raw materials and stable supply chains.
The industry is witnessing growth in various sectors. Ryan highlighted that regulations on PFAS and the shift from fluorinated coatings to inorganic alternatives have created demand for high-performance inorganic pigments. These pigments offer a wide range of colors, thermal stability, and compliance with FDA standards, making them suitable for kitchenware.
Orlowski mentioned the need for more suppliers in high-pressure processing (HPP) as some companies remain in consolidation mode. Ryan observed a trend where customers prefer suppliers who can consistently provide stable products, emphasizing Shepherd Color's long-standing focus on inorganic pigments.
Sustainability is a critical priority for customers, especially in Europe. Shepherd Color participates in the EcoVadis rating program, collaborating with clients to support their sustainability goals. Their Arctic series infrared reflective pigments enhance energy efficiency in buildings and improve the recyclability of plastics.
David Wawer, Executive Director of the Color Pigment Manufacturers Association (CPMA), noted that the North American pigment industry has faced costly regulatory waves from the U.S. government. He stated that these regulations have significantly increased costs for manufacturers and consumers alike, with price hikes becoming the norm since 2021.
The Biden administration's recent actions have left a negative legacy for the pigment industry, particularly with the EPA proposing regulations on CI Pigment Violet 29. Wawer expressed the CPMA's commitment to oppose this flawed regulatory proposal, emphasizing its lack of scientific basis.
Another area of concern is carbon black. In 2024, New York considered a bill to ban the use of carbon black in packaging materials, potentially listing it as a toxic substance. This proposal faced backlash, as nearly all black inks are derived from carbon black, and ultimately did not pass.
The pigment industry is evolving rapidly, driven by sustainability demands and regulatory changes. Stakeholders must remain vigilant to navigate these transformations effectively.
