Covestro Implements 100% Renewable Electricity at Four US Sites

ECHEMI 2025-02-21

Covestro, a leading global supplier of high-tech polymer materials, has announced that four of its US sites have achieved net zero emissions for Scope 2 electricity through the allocation of renewable energy certificates (RECs).

This achievement is the result of an existing virtual power purchase agreement (vPPA) between Covestro and Ørsted, a Denmark-based leader in renewable energy for the US market.

Covestro’s US sites in Channelview, Texas, South Deerfield, Massachusetts, New Martinsville, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, have achieved net zero emissions for Scope 2 electricity. The sites in South Deerfield, New Martinsville, and Pittsburgh are now even net zero for Scope 2. The remaining certificates have been applied to Covestro’s site in Baytown, Texas.

Thorsten Dreier, Chief Technology Officer at Covestro, said: “Even in a persistently challenging market environment, we are working towards our goal of climate-neutral production by 2035 and consistently implementing a strategy that is fully aligned with the circular economy. By leveraging renewable energy, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint, but also actively shaping a better future for our industry.”

The agreement with Ørsted will provide Covestro with 90 MW of renewable energy capacity, which will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 90,000 tonnes per year. This is an important step towards Covestro’s goal of climate-neutral production by 2035.

Samir Hifri, Chairman and President of Covestro, said: “Our collaboration with Ørsted is a great example of how collaboration and innovation can drive significant change in the industry. We are proud to be at the forefront of sustainable practices in the chemical industry and look forward to continuing to execute our strategy to achieve sustainable growth in the United States.”
