Novatek Predicts 2024 Profit Surge Amidst Sanctions and Production Challenges

ECHEMI 2025-02-21

On February 12, 2025, Novatek, Russia's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer, announced expectations of increased revenue and profit for 2024, driven by a rise in production. The company forecasts a 4.6% increase in adjusted profits, projecting earnings to reach $5.9 billion (approximately 553.4 billion rubles).

Novatek reported a 12.7% rise in revenue and a 13.2% increase in core earnings (EBITDA) compared to 2023. However, the company also revealed a staggering 15-fold increase in net debt, alongside a 17.6% decline in net cash provided by operating activities compared to the previous year.

The firm is the developer of the Arctic LNG 2 flagship project, which is crucial for Russia's aim to boost its global LNG market share from 8% to 20% by 2030-2035. Unfortunately, this project is facing significant challenges due to escalating Western sanctions.

Located on the Gydan Peninsula, the Arctic LNG 2 project has been delayed for months following the U.S. sanctions imposed in November 2023, which disrupted production schedules and export plans. The U.S. State Department has intensified efforts to prevent the export of LNG from this project, targeting companies involved and the vessels used for transportation.

Reports from September suggest that Russia has begun shipping LNG from the Arctic LNG 2 project, but the cargo has not reached any customers. Instead, it has been transferred to floating storage units in Russian or European waters, as potential buyers remain hesitant due to the intensified sanctions.

As Novatek navigates these challenges, its ability to adapt and maintain production levels will be critical for achieving its profit forecasts amidst a turbulent market landscape.
