BASF Breaks Ground on New Plant in India to Boost Cellasto Production Capacity

ECHEMI 2025-02-27

On February 24, 2025, BASF India Ltd. officially broke ground on a new facility in Dahisar, India, aimed at enhancing its production capacity for Cellasto® microcellular polyurethane (MCU). This new plant aligns with BASF's "Winning with Purpose" strategy and will utilize cutting-edge technology and automation systems to meet the company's high safety and quality standards. The facility is expected to commence operations in the second half of 2026, with its first phase featuring a new mold production line to address the rapidly growing local market demand.

This strategic investment emphasizes BASF's commitment to achieving long-term success in India. Cellasto®, which focuses on "producing in India for India," established its first plant in Dahisar in 2014, providing innovative solutions to the automotive industry to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). The latest investment demonstrates BASF's readiness to support the growth plans of various original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and signals strong confidence in the Indian market.

Bjoern Kophstahl, Vice President of Global Business Management for Cellasto®, stated, "The new plant is part of our efforts to innovate our production processes. Should demand increase, this facility will flexibly expand production further. This underscores our long-term commitment to better serve our Indian customers. I believe this strategic move will ensure our sustained success in India."

Alexander Gerding, Managing Director of BASF India Ltd., expressed pride in expanding Cellasto® capacity in India, reinforcing their commitment to this vibrant market. He noted, "This new mold production line will enhance our ability to provide innovative NVH solutions and solidify our position as the preferred partner for automotive customers. At BASF, we remain focused on delivering exceptional quality and tailored services to meet the specific needs of the Indian automotive industry — this capacity expansion is a significant step in that direction."

Since 1961, BASF has developed, produced, and sold a variety of components made from specialized microcellular polyurethane elastomers under the Cellasto® brand, becoming a leading global partner in the automotive industry. The brand has collaborated on various applications, including shock absorbers, top mounts, and coil spring isolators, while also providing material solutions for industrial and consumer applications.
