BASF Launches New EcoBalanced Product Reducing Carbon Footprint by 50 Percent

ECHEMI 2025-03-14

BASF, a global leader in melamine foam production, has unveiled its new Basuert® EcoBalanced product, which significantly reduces the carbon footprint (PCF) by 50% compared to standard grades. This innovative solution is designed to assist the transportation and construction industries in increasing the use of renewable materials while lowering carbon emissions.

The EcoBalanced product is produced using 100% green electricity and replaces fossil-based raw materials with renewable ones derived from organic waste and residual biomass. These materials are incorporated into the product through a certified biomass balance scheme, compliant with REDcert2 and ISCC PLUS standards. This approach not only minimizes the use of fossil resources but also provides reliable carbon footprint data, enabling customers to better assess their products' environmental impact and achieve sustainability goals.

For instance, the Basuert® G+ EcoBalanced foam with a density of 9 kg/m³ boasts a carbon footprint reduction of over two-thirds compared to other melamine resin foams on the market. When compared to alternative sound-absorbing materials like 30 kg/m³ PET felt, the carbon emissions are even more significantly lower. Additionally, the EcoBalanced product matches the material performance of its standard counterparts, allowing manufacturers to use it without altering existing production processes or investing in new equipment. Most applications utilizing the EcoBalanced version do not require re-certification.

“Our Basuert® EcoBalanced is the lowest carbon footprint melamine resin foam available on the market,” said Tarek Abuzarour, Head of Global Business for Basuert®. “This product helps our customers make significant strides toward their net-zero emission targets. Clients can trust the high quality of EcoBalanced and leverage its sustainability advantages to stand out in the market while reducing fossil resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.” BASF is a pioneer in providing fully transparent carbon emission data, assisting customers in calculating and reducing their carbon footprint within the transportation and construction sectors, which are critical to global carbon reduction efforts.

BASF has developed software to calculate the cradle-to-gate carbon footprints of its products, including Basuert®, encompassing all greenhouse gas emissions related to product manufacture. This includes emissions from raw material procurement, factory operations, and energy consumption during production. Measures to reduce the carbon footprint involve using green electricity and allocating renewable materials via biomass balance schemes, confirmed by third-party certifications. Under the REDcert2 and ISCC PLUS standards, BASF has successfully replaced fossil raw material equivalents needed for biomass balance products purchased by customers.
