Amcor Completes Waterborne Coatings Plant in Malaysia

ECHEMI 2025-04-14

Amcor, a developer and manufacturer of responsible packaging solutions, has announced the completion of its state-of-the-art medical packaging coating plant in Selangor, Malaysia. The state-of-the-art plant is the first in Asia to feature cutting-edge air knife coating technology and is designed to strengthen its ability to deliver high-quality sterile packaging to healthcare customers in the region.

The new plant expands Amcor’s existing medical packaging plant in Selangor, creating an integrated campus that makes Amcor the first company in Asia to produce both top and bottom substrates for medical device packaging. This development provides key advantages to customers, including enhanced supply chain resilience and reduced lead times.

The plant is equipped with advanced technologies such as waterborne coating systems, in-line inspection systems and air knife technology, setting new standards for precision and efficiency. Air knife technology in particular uses high-velocity airflow to ensure uniform coating, improving product consistency and reducing material waste.

“Amcor’s investment in this new plant reflects our unwavering commitment to supporting customers in the Asia Pacific region,” said Chris Keneally, President of Amcor Flexible Packaging Asia Pacific. By introducing advanced coating technologies and increasing local capacity, we are better able to meet the region’s growing demand for sterile, reliable packaging and provide customers with greater flexibility and security.

“Local production of our industry-leading global product platforms brings us closer to our customers and enhances security of supply and flexibility,” said Virginie Maes, Vice President of Global Healthcare at Amcor. “By investing in advanced coating technologies and expanding our regional capacity, we are not only meeting the growing demand for high-performance healthcare packaging, but also reinforcing our commitment to providing a consistent and innovative value proposition to our customers around the world.”

The new facility is part of Amcor’s broader commitment to expanding its healthcare capabilities in the Asia Pacific region. Recent initiatives include the acquisition of China-based healthcare packaging company MDK, the establishment of a grid-coated paper division in India, and the construction of a coextrusion blown film and printing facility in Singapore.
