China Opens First 1150 KM Hydrogen Truck Corridor in the West with 10 Heavy-Duty Vehicles on the Move

China has officially launched its first interregional hydrogen-powered freight corridor, as 10 hydrogen fuel cell trucks loaded with chemical products, electronics, and auto parts departed from Chongqing on April 14. After refueling at Sinopec’s Ganshui hydrogen station, these vehicles will travel through Guizhou to their final destination at Qinzhou Port in Guangxi, marking the beginning of routine operations for this newly completed route.

 

This “hydrogen corridor” stretches about 1,150 kilometers, supported by four hydrogen refueling stations strategically built by Sinopec. It links key logistical hubs across western provinces, creating a new model for low-carbon long-haul transport in rugged terrain. The project is a milestone for China’s western hydrogen economy, boosting the development of green, efficient, and safe land-sea logistics in the region.

 

The corridor passes through areas such as Chongqing Changshou, Liupanshui in Guizhou, and Baise in Guangxi, all rich in hydrogen resources. Technologies like electrolysis and ammonia cracking have already scaled up here, while industrial byproduct hydrogen has reached an annual output exceeding 400,000 tons, enough to power 360,000 logistics vehicles. This infrastructure supports long-range freight while demonstrating hydrogen’s potential in overcoming complex geographical challenges.

 

More than a transport project, this corridor functions as a strategic industrial connector. With an estimated annual capacity of 220,000 TEUs, the route passes through logistics hubs in Chongqing, Guiyang, and Nanning. It serves as a testbed for a new ecosystem integrating hydrogen supply, green logistics, and industrial innovation, promoting synergy between the energy and transport sectors.

 

Sinopec has taken a leading role in accelerating hydrogen infrastructure. In Chongqing, it pioneered China’s largest hydrogen supply center using byproduct hydrogen, with a daily supply of 3,200 kg. The city is now home to seven operational refueling stations, including the world’s first underground hydrogen storage station. In Guangxi, seven stations are already running, and the first commercial ammonia cracking and refueling facility is in operation. Guizhou is also stepping up, building a policy-technology-resource synergy model around its Guiyang station.

 

Sinopec’s senior VP Yu Baocai reaffirmed the company’s commitment to China’s dual carbon goals. Sinopec will expand hydrogen investment, improve refueling networks, and collaborate across the value chain to lower costs and scale up hydrogen logistics. With 144 hydrogen stations nationwide and seven “hydrogen corridors” including the new western route, Sinopec has become the world’s largest operator of hydrogen stations.
