334gsm Compostable Paper Hits Market to Replace Plastic in Hot and Cold Food Packaging

Metpack has launched a home-compostable coated paper solution certified under EN 13432 and AS 5810, offering a new benchmark in sustainable food packaging. Utilizing BASF’s ecovio® 70 PS14H6, a bio-based and biodegradable polymer, the new product—marketed as Ezycompost—delivers food safety, oil and moisture resistance, and heat stability up to 100°C, while avoiding persistent microplastics after disposal.

 

As regulatory pressure intensifies globally to reduce single-use plastics, the shift to coated paper packaging is accelerating. However, conventional paper is unsuitable for foods with high liquid or fat content—where Ezycompost excels. It can be processed on standard extrusion lines at high speeds, and its coating is 40% thinner than PLA, improving efficiency. Unlike PLA, Ezycompost is certified for home composting, enabling disposal in backyard bins along with food scraps.

 

The coating doesn’t stick to chill rolls, requires no adhesive, and offers excellent sealing and printability. It also performs equally to polyethylene in strength, but decomposes naturally without leaving toxic residues. Applications include frozen trays, microwave-safe bowls, and hot or cold drink cups.

 

Sühan Gürer, VP of Sales and Project Development at Metpack, highlighted that Ezycompost allows customers to meet sustainability targets without compromising quality. The product’s 334 gsm total composition ensures rigidity, and its compostable certification makes it a viable substitute for traditional PE-coated paper.

 

BASF’s Michael Bernhard Schick emphasized ecovio®’s certified biodegradability in both industrial and home composting systems, and its high bio-based content of 70–80%. A biomass-balanced (BMB) version is also available with 25% lower carbon footprint, using renewable feedstocks from waste.

 

This development marks a major stride toward closing the nutrient loop through organic recycling, while enabling safe use of recycled paper in food packaging—thanks to ecovio®’s superior migration barrier.
