West Asia Tensions Squeeze Pharma Raw Materials

ECHEMI 2026-04-30

Tensions in West Asia have continued to hit pharmaceutical manufacturing through raw-material and logistics channels. Reports from India’s pharma hubs show sharp pressure on petrochemical-linked APIs, excipients, solvents, intermediates and packaging materials, with some manufacturers facing fast-moving quotations and rising uncertainty. One report said prices for key materials such as metformin and paracetamol had surged, while excipients, solvents and packaging were also affected.

The commercial problem is simple: many medicines are price-sensitive, but their chemical inputs are exposed to global energy and logistics shocks. When crude, gas, solvents and intermediates move together, drug manufacturers can face a cost squeeze they cannot easily pass on. This is especially difficult for essential medicines under price controls.

The situation also shows how pharmaceutical supply chains remain tied to wider petrochemical infrastructure. Even when a medicine is made domestically, its upstream chemistry may depend on imported intermediates, energy-intensive production or shipping routes exposed to geopolitical disruption. That makes raw-material security a much broader issue than API self-sufficiency alone.

For buyers, this may accelerate supplier diversification and inventory buffering. For producers, it reinforces the need to understand not only API prices, but also solvent, reagent, packaging and freight exposure.
