ANVISA Updates Additive Rules
Brazil’s ANVISA published Normative Instruction No. 432 in April 2026, updating rules for food additives and technological adjuvants authorized for use in food. The update is part of Brazil’s ongoing effort to refine its additive framework and keep technical permissions aligned with current food manufacturing needs.
The importance of this kind of regulation is often underestimated. Additives and processing aids may operate in the background, but they affect preservation, texture, color, stability, processing efficiency and sensory performance. When a regulator updates additive permissions, it can immediately affect formulation, labeling, import compliance and supplier documentation.
For international food companies, Brazil is too large a market to treat as an afterthought. Updated additive lists may open opportunities for some ingredients while narrowing flexibility for others. Companies selling into Brazil need to review whether their formulations still match local permissions and use limits.
This also reflects a wider Latin American regulatory trend: supplement, additive and food-safety rules are becoming more structured and more frequently updated. The companies that monitor these changes early will avoid costly relabeling or reformulation delays.
