India’s 2.4 Billion Dollar Green Hydrogen Push Hygenco Ammonia Plant Breaks Ground

ECHEMI 2025-06-16

On June 11, India’s Odisha state marked a major milestone in its green energy ambitions as five industrial projects, including the Hygenco Green Ammonia Plant, began construction in the Gopalpur industrial park. The total investment for these projects is a staggering 205 billion Indian rupees (approximately $2.4 billion or €2.1 billion), signaling a rapid acceleration in India’s green hydrogen and solar manufacturing strategies.

Hygenco Green Ammonia Plant stands out as the flagship project with a 40 billion rupee investment and an annual production capacity of 1.1 million tons. Backed by Danish company Topsoe’s technology, the plant will utilize renewable energy to synthesize hydrogen and ammonia in a fully sustainable process. Once operational, the plant’s output will target international markets, positioning India as a key global supplier of green ammonia.

This project cluster aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while boosting renewable energy capacity. Analysts predict that by 2027-2028, these projects could capture 5%-8% of the global green ammonia market, while diminishing dependence on Chinese solar components. This investment not only advances India’s self-reliance agenda but also supports its 2070 carbon neutrality goal, placing the country at the forefront of the global energy transition.
