Australia and New Zealand Consider Approval for Genetically Modified Purple Tomato

On June 20, 2025, the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) announced the evaluation of Application A1333, which seeks approval for the use of genetically modified (GM) purple tomatoes in food.

The purple tomato, developed by Norfolk Healthy Produce Inc., has been genetically modified to generate natural blue pigments (anthocyanins) during ripening, resulting in its distinct purple skin and flesh. Anthocyanins are known for their antioxidant properties, making this tomato a potential innovation in functional foods.

FSANZ will assess the molecular composition, nutritional profile, and safety data of the GM purple tomato as part of the Health Canada-FSANZ Shared Assessment Process (SAP). This marks the sixth GM food evaluated under the SAP framework.

The application currently focuses solely on the use of purple tomatoes as food in Australia and New Zealand. Commercial cultivation would require separate approvals from the Gene Technology Regulator (GTR) in Australia and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in New Zealand. Additionally, importation of seeds is subject to strict biosecurity regulations managed by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) in Australia and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) in New Zealand.

Public submissions will be invited if FSANZ’s assessment supports amendments to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.
