200,000 Barrels Daily Target Shell and Equinor Unite as Adura to Dominate UK North Sea Oil
Shell and Equinor have unveiled their new joint venture, Adura, which is set to become the largest oil and gas producer in the UK North Sea. The name “Adura” merges Aberdeen—the hub of the UK oil industry—with “durability,” reflecting the company’s commitment to long-term energy supply.
Each partner will hold a 50% stake, and Adura is expected to launch operations by the end of this year, pending regulatory clearance. The joint venture will combine both firms’ UK offshore oil and gas assets, including Equinor’s interests in Mariner, Rosebank, and Buzzard, and Shell’s stakes in Shearwater, Penguins, Gannet, Nelson, Pierce, Jackdaw, Victory, Clair, and Schiehallion fields.
Production is forecast to rise rapidly—from roughly 140,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day to more than 200,000 barrels within five years, rivaling Harbour, the UK’s top producer. Adura’s headquarters will be in the heart of Aberdeen, securing the city’s position as a global energy powerhouse.
Equinor will retain ownership of its cross-border assets like Utgard and Statfjord, as well as its offshore wind, hydrogen, and carbon capture operations. This landmark move marks a new era in UK energy, boosting national supply security and reinforcing Aberdeen’s vital role in global oil and gas.
