Trump Hits Brazilian Beef with 50 Percent Tariff Experts Warn of Price Shifts and Global Trade Shakeup
On July 30, President Trump announced a steep 50% tariff on Brazilian imports to the US, excluding over 700 products—but beef didn’t make the exemption list. The new measure takes effect August 6, raising urgent questions on its impact for Brazil’s meat industry and consumers.
In the short term, US buyers will shoulder the extra costs, so Brazilian domestic meat prices may see little immediate change. However, if American demand drops due to higher prices, Brazilian producers could face oversupply at home, initially pushing beef prices lower. Itaú BBA’s Cesar de Castro Alves notes that restricted US exports might temporarily boost domestic supply, causing a short-term dip in beef prices.
Cepea data shows that Brazilian finished cattle prices dropped 7.21% in July, aided by falling feed costs. But Rabobank’s Wagner Yanaguizawa argues the tariff won’t necessarily drive prices down. With slaughter numbers expected to decline in the second half of the year and more breeding cows being retained, a price rebound is likely—even without the new tariff.
The US is Brazil’s second-largest beef export market (12%), but trails far behind China, which buys about half of Brazil’s beef exports. Experts suggest that Brazilian suppliers could redirect shipments to other growing markets, such as Egypt, especially as competitors like Australia and the US face supply challenges due to disease outbreaks.
With Trump’s tariff shaking up global trade routes, Brazilian beef may find new buyers, but volatility in both domestic and international prices is almost certain.
