BASF Pushes Triple-Action Weed Control
BASF’s introduction of Ridivex herbicide is a clear example of how the weed-control market is being reshaped by resistance pressure. The company describes Ridivex as a convenient all-in-one post-emergence solution for corn, combining saflufenacil, dicamba and pyroxasulfone in a premix designed for early post-emergence use. Each active ingredient brings a different site of action, giving the product a triple-mechanism approach aimed at broadleaf weed control, residual performance and better resistance management. The herbicide is currently under review by the US Environmental Protection Agency, so it is not yet registered for sale, but BASF is already framing it as a response to one of the biggest agronomic headaches corn growers face today.
That headache is simple to describe and increasingly expensive to ignore. Resistant weed populations are spreading, single-mode herbicide programs are losing reliability, and many farmers have been forced into more complicated spray plans that require extra passes, additional products and tighter timing. The cost is not only financial. It is also operational. Each extra intervention increases pressure on labor, equipment scheduling and decision-making during already narrow seasonal windows. BASF’s pitch for Ridivex is therefore not just about efficacy. It is about reducing complexity at a time when weed control has become more fragmented and more demanding.
The product’s commercial appeal rests heavily on its combination of fast contact activity and residual control. BASF says Ridivex can control more than 200 broadleaf weeds, with visible activity beginning within four hours after application. The addition of saflufenacil is said to improve uptake and translocation, strengthening the contact phase of control. At the same time, the company emphasizes the pyroxasulfone component, building on the technical base of Zidua SC, to provide up to eight weeks of residual suppression against a wide range of broadleaf and grass weeds. That dual promise matters because growers increasingly want herbicides that do more than solve the problem they can already see. They want products that also reduce the next wave of pressure before it emerges.
BASF is also stressing crop safety, which is critical in a product intended for early post-emergence use. When multiple active ingredients are bundled into one solution, farmers expect not only stronger control but greater simplicity and confidence. If the crop safety profile is convincing, the premix model becomes much more attractive.
What Ridivex represents, above all, is a broader shift in the herbicide market. The industry is moving away from narrow single-solution thinking and toward more layered formulations built to survive the realities of resistance. In that environment, a successful herbicide is no longer defined only by what it kills. It is defined by how much decision pressure it removes from the grower. BASF clearly understands that point, and Ridivex is being positioned accordingly.
