Typhoon Bavi Hits Zhejiang and Fujian, Putting Two Major Petrochemical Hubs at Logistics Risk

Between July 11 and 12, 2026, Typhoon Bavi made landfall on China’s eastern coast, affecting Zhejiang, Fujian, Shanghai and surrounding regions. Authorities activated emergency measures, suspended some port operations, moved vessels to safety and disrupted flights and ferry services. Millions of residents were evacuated across the affected provinces and municipalities. Although the storm weakened after landfall, heavy rainfall and transportation disruptions continued to affect coastal supply chains.

Zhejiang and Fujian are among China’s most concentrated coastal chemical regions. Zhejiang hosts Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, Sinopec’s Zhenhai complex and the Zhoushan integrated refining and petrochemical base. Fujian includes the Quangang, Meizhou Bay and Gulei petrochemical clusters. These sites produce fuels, aromatics, olefins and polymers, while relying heavily on ports for crude oil, naphtha and liquid chemical feedstocks.

During the typhoon, ports in Ningbo, Shanghai and parts of Taiwan suspended or restricted operations, with shipping sources warning of possible delays of three to seven days. For chemical plants, the first challenge is not necessarily physical damage to equipment. It is often the inability of feedstock vessels to berth, restrictions on hazardous-material trucking, container backlogs and difficulties ensuring safe worker movement.

As of July 14, public information had not confirmed prolonged, widespread shutdowns at major Zhejiang or Fujian petrochemical plants. The most accurate description is therefore a logistics and delivery disruption, rather than a confirmed nationwide chemical supply outage. However, continuous-process plants have limited flexibility, and extended port congestion could eventually force operating-rate reductions.

Bavi is another reminder that China’s coastal chemical model combines strong port access and integration with concentrated exposure to typhoons and extreme rainfall. Alternative berths, storage buffers, diversified feedstock channels and disaster-response planning are becoming essential parts of normal supply-chain management.
