How to prepare acetic anhydride and its uses

1) Place your container over a heat source.
This is the first step on how to prepare acetic anhydride .This may vary from stove, oven, electric burner, etc. Heat the container until the water gets boiling. Make sure it's not boiling on your food and is not too hot to touch at all times. The temperature has to be just below boiling for the reaction to take place.
2) Once ready - add your acetic acid into the container.
Now that you have a source of heat and a container - you're almost there. Add your acetic acid into the container. We recommend using a plastic or glass container so as not to affect any other materials in the room with fumes or sprues' potential dangers (explosive and fire risks). Acetic acid can be added to a container outdoors, but it is imperative to note that the heat source should still be present.
3) Wait for your acetic anhydride to form.
Your reactants should turn into a clear liquid, and then to a white powder or crystals. This reaction is best done overnight, so that it'll settle and become a lot easier to handle. Once you've collected your acetic anhydride - use it as needed and store any excess safely in an airtight container until needed.
Be careful not to breathe the fumes as they can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. If you have sensitive skin - wear gloves to prevent irritation from contact with your skin.
Uses of acetic anhydride
1. In the production of ethers
Ethyl acetate, dimethyl phthalate and methyl ethyl ketone are just some example of chemicals that can be used to produce anhydrides. The reaction between acetic anhydride and water is a good example of acid-base reactions. This reaction takes place when acetic anhydride reacts with water to produce salt and formic acid.
2. In the production of solvents
Acetone is a solvent that is used in many industries including nail polish remover or paint thinners for example. Acetone is obtained from acetaldehyde, which is a byproduct of acetic anhydride. The by-product of acetone contains these two properties, which combined together are needed to produce acetone as a solvent.
3. In the production of phenol
Phenol is used in the process of making plastics and resins, as well as in chemical synthesis. In order for a reaction to take place between the phenol and acetic anhydride, water has to be added into your mixture. Ethyne (C2H5) releases chlorine when it reacts with acid so when you add water into the mix, it causes the reaction of acid with ethyne to create chlorine gas. The chlorine gas will then react with the phenol to become acetone.
4. In the production of pharmaceuticals
Acetic anhydride is a reagent used in making ephedrine derivatives, which are preferred for treating asthma attacks and hay fever. It is also used in the synthesis of blockers and amphetamines, among others. Because it is not easy to buy acetic anhydride legally, some people have now resorted to making them (or buying them) illegally in order to make their personal drugs at home.
5. In the production of explosives
Acetic anhydride is used in the production of explosives and detonators. It can be produced in a few compounds other than its most common form by mixing two compounds such as acetone with acetic anhydride. However, it can also be produced by creating a mixture (Bazooka-F) containing benzoyl chloride, sulfuric acid and acetic anhydride, for example. Acetone is a diabetogenic compound that affects the nervous system of organisms when ingested in large amounts which could have some adverse effects on humans. As such, it is toxic to animals and humans alike that consume amounts found even in food. Acetic anhydride also presents a potential health risk and should therefore be handled carefully.
6. In the production of colic acid
Acetic acid is used in the synthesis of colic acid, which is a medicine used in treating pain and inflammation. It is also used in the manufacture of aniline and ureic acid, which are constituents of herbicides and detergents. Colic acid acts by increasing salivation so it can provide relief through the secretion of an acid near to the site of inflammation which is currently being treated.
