Shanghai Petrochemical Ethylene Glycol Unit Caught Fire, Ethylene Unit or Stopped!
According to the official Weibo of Shanghai Petrochemical Online, at around 4:00 on June 18, a fire broke out in the ethylene glycol plant area of the Shanghai Petrochemical Chemical Department, and the company immediately launched the first-level plan. At present, the fire at the scene has been brought under control and protective burning is being implemented.
Just now, Shanghai Fire Protection Weibo also released news that at 4:28 on June 18, a fire broke out in the ethylene glycol unit of a petrochemical company on Long'an East Road, Jinshan District, Shanghai. After receiving the alarm, the city 119 command center quickly dispatched Jinshan, Fengxian, Rescue forces such as the chemical industry zone went to the scene to put out the rescue, and are currently in full rescue.
It is reported that Shanghai Petrochemical's 423,000-ton ethylene glycol plant (33,300 tons of diethylene glycol and 0.9 million tons of triethylene glycol) caught fire. Due to the large fire, it is expected that the entire large ethylene plant may be shut down. There are two sets of ethylene cracking units totaling 700,000 tons, supporting 140,000 tons of ethylene oxide, 110,000 tons of butadiene, 190,000 tons of ethylene tar, and 540,000 tons of cracked carbon. 10+200,000 tons of pyrolysis gasoline.

Ethylene glycol is a colorless, odorless, sweet liquid with low toxicity to animals. Ethylene glycol is miscible with water and acetone, but has low solubility in ethers. Used as solvent, antifreeze and raw material for synthetic polyester. Polyethylene glycol (PEG), a high polymer of ethylene glycol, is a phase-transfer catalyst also used in cell fusion; its nitrate ester is an explosive.
According to the official website, Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co., Ltd. is a holding subsidiary of Sinopec Corp., located in Jinshan District, Shanghai. A production base for petrochemicals, synthetic resins and synthetic fibers.
According to the social responsibility report disclosed by Shanghai Petrochemical, from 2019 to 2021, the company's safety production investment was 234.78 million yuan, 284.72 million yuan, and 112.37 million yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 60% in 2021. During the seven years from 2015 to 2021, the company has zero major fire and explosion accidents and major liability accidents.
