Market analysis of China's coal industry in the first eight months of 2019

In the first eight months of 2019, China's coal and lignite imports exceeded 220 million tons according to the data of China Customs, China's coal and lignite imports increased by a small margin in the first two quarters of 2019. In August 2019, China's coal and lignite imports were 32.952 million tons, up 14.9% year on year. Cumulatively, from January to August 2019, China's coal and lignite import volume was 220.28 million tons, an increase of 8.1% year on year. In terms of import amount, China's coal and lignite import amount in August 2019 was US $2632 million, down 1.5% year on year. In August 2019, the average import price of China's coal and lignite was $798800 / T, down by $8100 / T compared with July. Cumulatively, from January to August 2019, China's coal and lignite imports amounted to US $17380.8 million, down 4.1% year on year, with an average import price of US $789000 / ton. In the first eight months of 2019, China's raw coal output exceeded 2.4 billion tons. According to the statistics released by the National Bureau of statistics, China's raw coal output in 2018 was 3545.908 million tons, up 5.2% year on year.

 

In the first two quarters of 2019, China's raw coal output increased. In August 2019, China's raw coal output was 3160.02 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5%, with a growth rate of 7.2 percentage points lower than that of last month. The average daily output was 10.19 million tons, a decrease of 200000 tons compared with that of last month. In cumulative terms, from January to August 2019, China's raw coal output was 2409.286 million tons, up 4.5% year on year. In the first eight months of 2019, China's export of coal and lignite was close to 4 million tons. In the first two quarters of 2019, China's export of coal and lignite decreased. In August 2019, China's export of coal and lignite was 341000 tons, down 29.8% year on year. Cumulatively, China's coal and lignite exports reached 397.9 tons from January to August 2019. Compared with the same period last year, it increased by 21.5%. In terms of export amount, the export amount of China's coal and lignite in August 2019 was US $50.7 million, down 27.9% year on year. In August 2019, the average export price of China's coal and lignite was $1.4916 million / ton, an increase of $112700 / ton compared with July. Cumulatively, from January to August 2019, China's coal and lignite exports amounted to US $64463 million, a year-on-year increase of 23.8%, and the average export price was US $161970 / 10000 tons.
