Plastics Bags Seized from Shops

In a crackdown launched by Thoothukudi Corporation authorities here on Thursday, around 100 kg of plastic bags with less than 50 microns were seized and penalties imposed on traders.

Based on a High Court order and direction from Commissioner and Special Officer of Corporation, Alby John Varghese, several shops on Jeyaraj Road and Palayamkottai Road, and in Thoothukudi old bus stand area were raided.

According to Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, the plastic material with thickness less than 50 microns was harmful to environment, City Health Officer, Pradeep V. Krishnakumar said. Around 50 shops and nine hotels were raided. Plastic bags kept in hotels as packing material were also seized. Simultaneously, the team also checked littering in public places, especially near tea stalls and roadside eateries, and slapped fine on those responsible for such acts. The penalty was imposed under the Solid Waste Management Rules.

Besides, smokers at public places were also warned and a fine of Rs. 1, 100 was imposed on them. A total fine of Rs. 27,800 was imposed on offenders.
