Get to know about what is magnesium permanganate used for

ECHEMI 2022-07-11

What is magnesium permanganate used for is question that many might have. Magnesium permanganate is used as a chemical to test for the presence or absence of carbon dioxide in solutions. For example, if your lab partner added yeast extract to a tube of water and it boiled for a long time, you could use magnesium permanganate to detect whether carbon dioxide was present in the solution. Other uses includes;

1.As oxidizing agent in organic chemistry

This is one of the many uses of magnesium permanganate that you can do in an organic chemistry lab. Magnesium permanganate is used to oxidize alcohols and ketones in order to make aldehydes and carboxylic acids.

2.In organic synthesis

Magnesium permanganate is often used as a reagent in organic synthesis because it makes a great oxidant for most functional groups such as alcohols, aldehydes, epoxides, ketones and more. This type of chemical is most commonly used in the production of acetic acid. You can also use it to remove the groups from various chemicals.

3.Testing for the presence of blood in water

If you want to test for the presence of blood in water, you can use magnesium permanganate to do such a test because it will turn red when in contact with blood or meat. However, if there is no blood present, it will only form a purple precipitate due to interaction with other materials that could be present in your sample. This process can be done easily by dropping a few crystals of it into the water and allowing it to react for 10 minutes before rinsing with distilled water and then checking its color. If there are no signs of the presence of blood in your sample, you will only get the purple precipitate.

4.In pottery making

Potters make use of this chemical in the production of their works because it can stop your clay pieces from becoming moldy during their drying out period. The greenish tint that will be left after it is poured into the clay is what helps prevent mold because it contains chromium and magnesium ions which do not allow bacteria to thrive.

5.Cleaning laboratory glassware

In a chemistry lab, you can use this chemical to clean up glassware that have high levels of organic matter left on them. All you have to do is to leave your glassware in a solution of either magnesium sulfate or magnesium nitrate for about an hour or two and then wash it off with warm water and soap. This will not affect the material of your glassware.

6.Determine the blood group

This chemical is used to determine the blood type of a patient. This is done by exposing a sample to this chemical in order to impart an oxidant reaction. The color that the solution turns depends on the blood group of the patient.

7.In cleaning windows

If you want to clean your windows, you can use magnesium permanganate with baking soda or sodium carbonate in order to safely remove any substances that are attached to it such as nicotine and beer stains. You can also use it for making green cleaners for your home in order to remove many stains that are present on your carpet and upholstery.

8.Preventing rust from iron

If you want to prevent rust from iron, you can make a solution of this chemical with two cups of water and some salt. This solution could be used to coat the iron piece using a sponge or cloth in order to prevent it from becoming rusty. You can also use it to remove rust that is already present on your iron. It will do this by combining the chemical with hot water while stirring well and letting it sit for about an hour before washing it off with warm water.

9.Detergent substitute

In baking, you could use magnesium permanganate as a substitute for detergent when washing your dishes or in making soaps. This is because it will not harm the flavor of your baked goods. This answer the question what is magnesium permanganate used for?

10.Preventing corrosion in copper and brass

If you have a copper or brass object that has become corroded, you can use magnesium permanganate as a disinfectant to prevent it from becoming more corroded. Similarly, if you have any items that are made of iron but are unable to rust, you can use this chemical to prevent them from being corroded by making a solution of it with water and applying it to the item using a cloth.

The above are just a few of the many uses of magnesium permanganate. This chemical can be used to perform many experiments in the lab and around the home. Magnesium permanganate is an excellent chemical to have in a laboratory because it is very versatile and has many uses. The above will help you to know what is magnesium permanganate used for.
