Get to understand what is nernst equation
What is nernst equation is a question that is not easily answered as it is a complex equation that has been successfully applied to many areas of science. First, let's define what the nernst equation actually is. The nernst equation was developed by nineteenth-century physicist Willhelm Nernst and it determines the potential difference between two points in an electrochemical cell based on their respective concentrations of ions in solution.
Importance of nernst equation
1. By using nernst equation human can find the work of a specific electrochemical cell that is theoretical. But we have to have practice first.
2. Nernst equation is used in ion transport studies and it can be applied to some electroplating processes where solutions are electrolyzed.
3. It is also used to calculate the potential in a living cell and the concentration of ions in solution.
4. It has been used for studies on the absorption of ions by trees.
5. The nernst equation is difficult to use because it requires very specific information about the substances being studied, such as their ionic charges and concentrations, which are often immiscible and nearly impossible to measure directly.
Applications of of nernst equation
Nernst equation can be used to calculate the following;
1.Emf of an electrochemical cell
This application helps us to understand what is nernst equation. This is used to calculate the emf as a change in potential between two points when there is an electrochemical reaction occurring. The equation is usually written as V = −RT/n where V is the emf, R and n are positive scalar charges, and T is temperature of the solution. If a charge moves from one point to another point, the total amount of current which flows through this system does not change.
2.Electrolysis
Electrolysis is a chemical process in which one or more substances split into ions according to their charges . In this process the polarity of the ionic system changes. With electroplating, ions are transferred between solution and the metal. The emf which is produced while this process is going on can be calculated using nernst equation. This may also explain what is nernst equation.
3.Collecting of aqueous ions
Ions are often collected by using electrodes placed in an acidic or basic solution, but they may also be collected using electrodes placed in solutions with larger concentrations of salts and higher concentrations of acids or bases. This can be achieved by placing an aqueous solution in a pH-buffering solution or adjusting the pH of this buffering solution.
4.Standard electrode potentials
This is used in electroplating to calculate the standard potentials of two media which are being plated. The standard potentials are needed to predict the amount of current that will flow in the system because they are a measure of the ability of ions to spread through electrolyte solutions.
5.Single electrode reduction or oxidation
This is a method of calculating the potential at which a substance will be reduced or oxidized by using nernst equation and the reduction or oxidation reaction.
6.Storing of ions in living cells
All living things have cells that are capable of storing ions and transporting them to where they are needed. The job of these ion transporters is to maintain the chemical stability of our cells and give them the ability to perform their specific tasks, such as maintaining our nervous system, storing energy, and making specific chemicals such as proteins for biological processes.
7.Absorption studies for ionic trees
Somehow many trees can absorb ions from ground water via their roots. Nernst equation can be used to predict the degree to which the ions in ground water are absorbed by ionic trees.
8.Work done by electrolytic cells
Elements in an electrolytic cell are split into ions according to their charges . When the potential difference between two points is applied, current flows from the point of lower potential, through the conductive material, and out through the other point. The work which is done at each point can be calculated using nernst equation.
9.The pH of solutions and solubility
This is the degree to which a substance will dissolve or be dissolved in water. This is important in electrolysis, chemical processes, and biological systems. The ions strongly interact with each other at high pH and they can be separated from each other at low pH values. The degree to which they can be separated varies with their ionic charges and concentrations. With higher concentrations of salts at lower pH's, the ions will have more difficulty being held together, allowing them to come apart into separate atoms or molecules while at lower pH's they will have less difficulty being held together in solution as a molecule or an ion, allowing them to come apart into atoms (or sometimes larger molecules).
The above information explains what is nernst equation and the applications of this equation. This can be applied to especialy electroplating and electrolysis. (n) = number of ions in solution (k) = constant [E] = electromotive force (e) = permittivity of a medium
