In this process of wool dyeing, the wool can be dipped in a boiling solution containing pcc. The wool gets moistened by the solution and for it to get dyed, it should be put under pressure in an autoclave.
5. It's used in bleaching to produce nearly white fabrics, since it doesn't destroy all the fibers and it helps textiles keep their shape. This is done by stretching wool or cotton fabrics over frames and then immersing them in a hot dilute solution of pcc, followed by washing and drying.
6. It's also used in the oil industry, which is to purify crude oil by stripping off all the impurities by catalytic processes, mainly oxidations and chlorination of hydrocarbons. This process is known as catalytic conversion.
7. It's also used in the production of tetrachloroethane, which is commonly known as bleach gas, because it reduces dichloromethane to tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene. How is Pyridinium chlorochromate prepared
1. Pyridinium chlorochromate can be prepared in the form of a dichromate salt as follows:
The following are steps to prepare it In order to do so, it is firstly dissolved in water and then added with ammonium carbonate to make a 10% solution. The next step is adding hydrochloric acid under high pressure at a temperature of about 270℃. Then this solution is cooled and filtered.
This process of pyridinium chlorochromate production will result in approximately 19% by weight of pure pyridinium dichromate, which has an odour resembling garlic or horseradish when freshly prepared, but smells like bitter almonds after aging.
2. The next step of pyridinium chlorochromate production is to dissolve ammonium dichromate in hydrochloric acid. To do so, about 1 gram of ammonium dichromate should be dissolved in about 100 ml of hydrochloric acid, which is either added to a flask or heated on the distillation apparatus. Then heating the solution at 250℃ will result in a large amount of hydrogen chloride gas (HCl), which is added with ammonia and water. The mixture should be stirred and then filtered.
