It must be noted that the solution grows cloudy with time and must be kept in a sealed container at all times to prevent contamination.

Use of Copper Oxalate Solution

The presence of starch will cause a dark blue color to develop in the solution. However, it is important to note that it tends to be less sensitive than the copper oxalate test. Therefore, if you are having trouble determining if your sample is starch or not, test for both the cupric sulfate and copper oxalate solutions and see which one yields a more intense color.

A copper sulfate solution (0.5M) is used as the oxidizing agent in this test. If starch is present, the solution will turn pink or red-orange due to color change caused by oxidative reaction of copper ions with reducing sugars present in the sample (sucrose and raffinose). This test can also be performed using a 0.5M potassium persulfate solution.

Use of Gluconic Acid Solution (GC/AgOAC)
