1. Discovery of Ytterbium

Ytterbium was the first element to be discovered in the "new lanthanide series" of rare-earth metals which are characterized by their highly similar chemical properties. The discovery of ytterbium was made by Swedish chemist, Carl Gustaf Mosander and his assistant, Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac who, during 1842 and 1843, separated ytterbium from an earlier discovered then-unknown element named erbium. Both elements were isolated from a sample of gadolinite and did not initially realize that they had isolated two different elements. The sample was a gift to Mosander by Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius.

2. Production of Ytterbium Meta

At the time of discovery, ytterbium was not considered noteworthy and was assigned the name "ytterbite" or "heavy erbium". However, in 1870, German chemist Georges Urbain discovered that ytterbium had different properties from erbium and the two elements were later given distinct names.

5. Ytterbium and the 'Super-Egg'

In 1895, a method of making the super-hard, super-strong ceramic material known as ytterbium oxide was discovered. This development was created at the time by Nobel prize winners Wilhelm Ostwald, Adolf von Baeyer and Georges Urbain. They worked in their laboratory to create a ceramic material that was 1/4 the density of lead but had the same hardness and durability of copper. However, what is interesting about this material is that it doesn't contain copper at all; instead it contains ytterbium and beryllium. This material was nicknamed the "super-egg" and is said to be invulnerable to all acids, including aqua regia, which can dissolve platinum. The super-egg is also said to have the ability of killing flies that fly into it and die instantly.

6. Ytterbium's Color

When ytterbium is heated to higher temperatures (>5500℉), it will glow with a brilliant neon-like orange/red color.
