Optic atrophy
Optic atrophy is not a single disease. It is the final outcome of various lesions of the optic nerve and damage to its myelin sheath or retinal ganglion cells and their axons, resulting in loss of nerve fibers and gliosis. It is a common term in pathology. It usually occurs in the axonal degeneration of ganglion cells between the retina and the lateral geniculate body. Due to the degeneration and atrophy of nerve fibers, patients often have decreased visual function and reduced visual field.
