The classification of epileptic seizures and epilepsy syndromes has undergone a long evolutionary process. For example, in the 1950s and 1970s, epileptic seizures were mainly classified into idiopathic epilepsy and secondary epilepsy based on etiology, grand mal, petit mal, and focal seizures based on clinical seizure types, frontal, temporal, parietal, or occipital epilepsy based on the discharge site of the electroencephalogram, and photosensitive epilepsy, limb pain epilepsy, diencephalic epilepsy, and psychomotor epilepsy based on the clinical characteristics of the seizures, making the classification of epilepsy more confusing and bringing inconvenience to treatment. With the continuous deepening of the understanding of epilepsy, the classification of epileptic seizures and epilepsy syndromes has become more and more complete and reasonable. In the past 20 years, both the basic and clinical research on epilepsy has made significant progress, and the classification of epilepsy in the 1980s has shown its limitations. In 1997, the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) established a task force chaired by Jerome Engel Jr., which consisted of four groups to review and revise the classification of epileptic seizures and epilepsy syndromes and put forward some suggestions for the classification of epileptic seizures and epilepsy syndromes (2001). This suggestion was a preparation or transitional period for the revision of the classification of epileptic seizures and epilepsy syndromes. However, the 1981 ILAE classification scheme for epileptic seizures is still used.
