Ventricular tachycardia in the elderly
Ventricular tachycardia (VT) refers to a rapid arrhythmia that occurs in the bundle branches, myocardial conduction fibers, and ventricular muscles below the bifurcation of the His bundle. Wellens defines it as: a frequency exceeding 100 beats/min, 3 or more consecutive spontaneous ventricular electrical depolarization activities, including monomorphic non-sustained and sustained ventricular tachycardia and polymorphic ventricular tachycardia. If the ventricular tachycardia is induced by programmed cardiac electrical stimulation during cardiac electrophysiological examination, it must be 6 or more sustained rapid ventricular beats (frequency > 100 beats/min). Ventricular tachycardia can originate from the left ventricle and the right ventricle. The frequency of sustained attacks often exceeds 100 beats/min, and the hemodynamic state may deteriorate, which may transform into ventricular flutter or ventricular fibrillation, leading to sudden cardiac death, and requires active treatment.
