Meconium aspiration syndrome
Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS), also known as meconium aspiration pneumonia, is caused by the fetus inhaling meconium-contaminated amniotic fluid in the womb or during birth, which leads to airway obstruction, lung inflammation and a series of systemic symptoms. In severe cases, it develops into respiratory failure or death. It is more common in full-term and post-term infants. According to statistics, the incidence of meconium aspiration syndrome accounts for 1.2%-2.2% of newborns.
