Chordoma is a local invasive or malignant tumor. It is a common extradural tumor involving the clivus and sacrum, formed by embryonic remnants or ectopic notochord. It mainly occurs in middle-aged and elderly people aged 50 to 60, but also occurs at other ages. These tumors can occur anywhere along the central axis of the spine, but are most common in the rostral clivus and sacrum. It grows slowly, and the patient often has been ill for more than 5 years before symptoms appear. Although chordoma grows slowly and rarely metastasizes to distant sites (it may metastasize in the late stage), it is highly locally destructive and endangers the human body as the tumor continues to grow. It is also very easy to recur after surgery, so it is still a malignant tumor.
