Pseudomembranous colitis is an acute necrotic inflammation of the mucosa that occurs mainly in the colon and is covered with pseudomembranes. This disease often occurs after antibiotic treatment and is therefore a iatrogenic complication. It has been confirmed to be caused by the toxin of Clostridium difficile. Severe cases can be fatal.
