Cervical vertigo in the elderly
Cervical vertigo is a series of clinical symptoms and signs such as dizziness, nausea, and vomiting caused by vertebral artery stimulation or compression, resulting in insufficient blood supply to the vertebral-basilar artery. It belongs to vertebral artery type cervical spondylosis, which is one of the common diseases in the elderly. Vertebral artery: It is the first branch of the subclavian artery. It runs upward along the inner edge of the anterior scalene muscle and enters the transverse foramen of the 6th cervical vertebra. However, it can also penetrate from the transverse foramen of the 5th, 4th, 3rd or 7th cervical vertebra. It enters the skull and reaches the plane of the medullary pontine groove. The left and right vertebral arteries merge into the basilar artery. The vertebral artery rises vertically in the transverse foramen, passes through the transverse foramen of the axis, runs horizontally upward, then bends upward, and vertically ascends to the transverse foramen of the atlas. It passes through the upper part of the transverse foramen of the atlas, goes backwards around the lateral mass of the atlas (the superior articular process of the atlas) to the vertebral artery groove on the outside of the posterior arch of the atlas, turns forward, enters the spinal canal along the vertebral artery groove at the outer edge of the posterior membrane of the atlas (or passes through this membrane), penetrates the spinal meninges and goes up, and enters the cranial cavity through the internal occipital foramen. The occipital vertebral artery surrounds the superior articular process of the atlas, and is located on the outside, back and inside of the articular process successively, with a large degree of tortuosity. When the relationship between the vertebrae changes, such as when the head is tilted back or rotated excessively, the vertebral artery can be affected, causing it to narrow or block, leading to brainstem ischemia. The branches of the vertebral-basilar artery supply the occipital lobe of the cerebral hemisphere, part of the temporal lobe, the posterior most of the thalamus, a small part of the lower part of the thalamus, the brainstem, cerebellum and the upper part of the spinal cord.
