Patellofemoral pain
Causes of patellofemoral pain include: congenital high patella, fibrosis of the patellar cartilage, tight hamstrings, tight Achilles tendons, tension in the vastus lateralis, patellar bundle and lateral supporting ligaments, atrophy of the vastus medialis, and a Q angle (the angle between the patellar ligament and the longitudinal axis of the thigh) greater than 15°. When the calf is internally rotated, the vastus medialis pulls the patella inward, while the other three muscles pull outward. The most common cause is that after excessive internal rotation, the patella is pulled outward and hits the lateral femoral condyle.
