Bile peritonitis
Bile peritonitis is an inflammation of the peritoneum caused by bile leaking from the biliary system into the abdominal cavity. Simple bile ascites is when there is only bile-like fluid in the abdominal cavity without signs of peritonitis. Bile peritonitis is usually caused by the overflow of sterile bile into the abdominal cavity, the stimulation of bile salts and their chemical toxicity. If the bile is contaminated or there is infection in the primary disease, secondary bacterial peritonitis may occur. The most common bacteria involved are Escherichia coli, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Bacteroides fragilis, etc. The bacterial content is usually >105/ml.
